Oh,
that mischievous monkey!
“George was a good little
monkey and always very curious.” So say all of the children’s books by H.A. and
Margret Rey. It’s taken over half a century for someone take on the challenge
of bringing this powerful prose to the screen. Unlike in the books, the title
character is subordinate to “the man with the yellow hat,” who is here called
Ted, works in a museum, and has the voice of Will Ferrell. Still, the tone
isn’t too different from the books. Light, pleasant. Probably too Saturday
morning cartoonish to really stand out, but enjoyable. The charming but quiet
songs Jack Johnson gives the proceedings an unusually mellow feel for a kids’
feature.
