Obvious Child (***1/4)

Yeah, it’s another indie comedy about creative class white folks in Manhattan/Brooklyn, but an above-average one. Yes, it’s also the “abortion comedy,” in the same sense, maybe, as Knocked Up or Juno were comedies about not having an abortion. That is, Jenny Slate’s character, a struggling comedian who likes to talk about her vagina, farts, and her personal life on stage (and off), does get pregnant and seek an abortion, but the movie is about the character, not about abortion. She has a nice dad (Richard Kind), a professor mother (Polly Draper),  straight and gay best friends, and she’s just gotten dumped by her boyfriend and stands to lose her job at a hip indie bookstore. Familiar elements, but what stands out is Slate’s performance and character. I don’t know how much she’s like the woman she plays, or to what degree the first-time director, Gillian Robespierre, crafted the script around her star, but the witty, insecure, tearful, profane, kidding personality the two have created for the character accounts for most of the movie’s appeal, though Jake Lacy as the nice guy who impregnates her properly accents the comedy with romance. In proper indie fashion, the story moves and concludes quickly.
