Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (***1/2)

Brothers Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman keep it in the family when they conspire to rob a suburban jewelry store. The plan is simple, nobody will get hurt. But then, of course, it goes wrong. With segments that move back and forth in time, and shift to follow different characters, 83-year-old director Sidney Lumet and first-time screenwriter Kelly Masterson structure their story like a puzzle. Albert Finney as the father, and Marisa Tomei, as Hoffman’s wife have key roles. Family relationships play into the motivations of the characters, but sentimentality never intrudes into the well-constructed suspense drama.
