Rodrigo García’s film is essentially nine short films, each
with a woman’s name as a title, although a few characters appear in two of the
segments. (For example, in one segment, Robin Wright Penn meets an old
boyfriend, now married, in the grocery. He appears with his wife in another
segment.) Many of the actors—Holly Hunter, Sissy Spacek, Joe Montegna—are
familiar faces. A couple of the stories, like the one with Hunter, are funny.
The last, with Glenn Close and Dakota Fanning as mother and daughter, is the
most touching. None was dull.
