A decent movie about the lives of real people. Gene Hackman plays a man who has an affair to mark his 50th birthday. There is a silly, overdone beginning in the bar where he celebrates his birthday and meets Ann-Margret. Ellen Burstyn, as his wife, is shattered as she’s left alone; his daughters are resentful (Amy Madigan) or accepting (Ally Sheedy). The ending is realistic, not fairy-tale-ish or sentimental. The movie is a little slow in parts but overall not too bad.
